Homowo Festival
Greater Accra Region
August/September
Homowo means "looting the hunger". This harvest festival is celebrated by the Ga people. It originates from a period of great famine, which was followed by a bumper harvest. During the month-long festival, the Ga chiefs are followed by drummers, dancers and singers through their areas.
Asafotu-Fiam Festival
Ada, Greater Accra
last Thursday of July - first weekend of August
This warriors festival is celebrated by the people of Ada. It comemmorates the victories and the warriors that fell on the battlefield. The colourful processions of the chiefs and traditional military groups are accompanied by drumming, dancing and singing.
Aboakyir Festival
Winneba
first Saturday of May
Aboakyir means "dear hunt". This popular festival is celebrated by the people of Winneba. It begins with a competitive dear hunt between two traditional warrior groups. The processing of the chiefs and warrior groups accompanied by music and dancing is the highlight of the adventurous event.
Bakatue Festival
Elmina, Central Region
first Tuesday of July
Bakatue means "opening of the Benya Lagoon into the sea". It symbolizes the beginning of a new fishing season, which is the main livelihood of the people of Elmina. The splendid ceremonies include processions, a durbar of chiefs and a colourful regatta of canoes on the Benya Lagoon.
Kundum Festival
Western Region
August - November
Kundum is celebrated by the coastal tribes of the Western Region. Beginning in August in Takoradi, the festival moves West from town to town at weekly intervals. Traditional drumming and dancing are of great importance during the festival.
