About

Kingy Mensah Percussions
is a project by Emmanuel Yaw Mensah. Despite all hardships, that life in Africa brings about, he had a vision of a great future for himself and his people.

Friends from different parts of the world were inspired by his faith and determination. To encourage his dream of escaping poverty through music, they brought in some tourists who wanted to learn how to play drum: A drumming workshop was the birth of Kingy Mensah Percussions in early 2007.

Encouraged by seeing his dream finally taking shape, he opened a small shop in Accra and even started selling abroad. The demand for Mensah's drums kept increasing over time, so that he officially registered "Kingy Drums & Crafts Enterprise" in late 2008. By now, his drums are played in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

About Mensah
Born in 1980, Mensah was raised in New Town, Accra, the capital city of Ghana. While the Greater Accra Region is Ga land, Mensah's parents belong to the Ewe, an ethnic tribe that occupies the Volta Region of Ghana and the southern parts of Togo and Benin.

Influenced by the cultures rich in traditional African music of both tribes, Mensah has been devoting all his time to drums since early childhood. At the young age of 10, he was invited to join his first music group.

Over the years, Mensah worked with various groups. Hewale Sounds, to mention one of them, is a well established group dedicated to neo traditional West African music.

By working with countless musicians from different parts of Ghana and West Africa and through continuous learning, Mensah gained a vast knowledge of traditional rhythms and masters the Djembe, Kpanlogo, Gome, Ewe drums and more.

Mensah worked with the Ghanaian youth for years to preserve the traditions. He formed his own culture groups and trained the drummers and dancers. A long time before he started selling instruments, he had been building drums for his own groups, for churches and schools. He now has more than 15 years experience in drum making.
